©Life on the streets can be hard on a person in just about any town , any country, any continent. In New York City, strangely enough, it seemed to be the norm for a great number of people. All of the people I photographed had one thing in common. They all conveyed a message, a message of faith, art and survival. ........All photographs were taken by Story Sloane III..... I find that the best way for me to get to know a city is to spend some time walking the streets. Manhattan is an environment that provides a photographer with endless possibilities. After spending a couple of weeks shooting the wonders of modern architecture I became enthralled with the street life of this massive city. It was my first introduction to the fine art of dinning from public waste containers. I marveled at the man who picked through discarded food selecting only the fruit and bypassing the half eaten soft pretzel. This practice of public dinning was foreign to me back then. Today, I can unfortunately witness the same type of desperate living right here in my hometown of Houston. My expectations of the Yankees up north was not very high but after a few weeks on the street I found that the majority of people I met were the same basic type of folks I knew back home. |
